The Kleinsteinbach sewage treatment plant, which is situated between Karlsruhe and Pforzheim, cleans waste water every day. It ensures the reliable removal of solids, fecal matter and all kinds of organic compounds from the community’s waste water. With the capacity to serve 32,000 inhabitants, it is one of Germany's medium-sized sewage treatment plants.

Project description

To ensure the future availability of a screw pump in the interim lift system and minimize maintenance costs, the operator of the sewage treatment plant decided to have us perform a preventive diagnostic check of the plant’s drive technology. This involved using a flexible video-endoscope to assess the condition of the gearing components and bearings in the installed gear unit (non-SEW product) without dismantling any of the drive technology. On the basis of a visual inspection of the bearings, teeth and video footage of the tooth flanks, significant signs of wear were already detected on the gear unit under inspection. There was a risk of breakage to the flanks and complete failure of the gear unit.

The diagnostic report prompted the operator to replace the existing gear unit with an X series three-stage helical gear unit. Our industrial gear unit was supplied as part of a complete package including an energy-efficient motor, motor adapter with torsionally flexible claw coupling and a pin coupling for attaching it to the worm shaft. The retrofit we performed included reviewing and extracting the existing drive components and installing the new products, including design adaptations and startup. This spared the customer any interface issues and kept the assembly outlay in the sewage treatment plant to a minimum.
